A local charity is seeking volunteers to take part in a fundraising walk along an ancient pilgrimage route in northern Spain.
The trek along the Camino de Santiago in aid of Ability West (formerly the Galway Association ), will take place from September 14 to 21. The organisation has provided services and supports to children and adults with an intellectual disability in Galway since 1962.
The seven day walk will take participants through the beautiful Spanish countryside as they follow in the footsteps of St James on the final stages of this historical walk on one of the oldest pilgrim routes in the world.
Ciarán Cuddihy, fundraising officer for Ability West, says the Camino de Santiago trek offers a “wonderful opportunity’ for walkers of all abilities to meet new friends, experience the beauty of the Spanish countryside and raise much needed funds for Ability West.
“Our trek is split into different stages with daily walks along the way which are varied but not difficult - some flat, some hilly, on tracks and on pathways through woods and across open plains, through villages and towns.
“This is a great opportunity for anyone interested in walking to enjoy meaningful walks across northern Spain, and at the same time, fundraise for a very worthy charity.”
Ability West will hold an information evening on the walk at the Galway Bay Hotel on Tuesday April 20 at 8pm.
“We are inviting anyone who is interested in participating in this historical walk to come along to the Galway Bay Hotel on Tuesday at 8pm. On the evening we will be outlining all details and we will also have plenty of practical tips and ideas for fundraising activities.”
