Claregalway enjoyed a double success at the Galway County Mixed League finals which took place in Galway Lawn Tennis Club on Saturday.
Twelve teams took part in the finals in the six divisions, with Claregalway winning both the division two and three finals. Other winners were new entrants Boyle, Loughrea, Cortoon, and Oughterard.
The closest final was in division one with Boyle up against Cortoon. This was an epic battle with league newcomers Boyle just shading it over the strong Galway side in the third set of the final game.
Claregalway overcame Oranmore and Loughrea in their respective divisional finals with 4 - 1 wins, although both matches could have gone all the way to the last game as they did during the matches throughout the season.
In division four Cortoon proved too strong for an up-and-coming Galway side, winning on a scoreline of 4-1. Having won an All-Ireland last year, this Cortoon team will be hoping to repeat the feat in the coming weeks.
In the division five final Loughrea beat Furbo 5-2 which featured some thrilling games of badminton. This Furbo team should learn from this experience and be hot favourites to win the title next year.
In division six last year’s beaten finalists Oughterard captured the title with a well-deserved victory over a strong Loughrea side 4-2.
All winners will now contest the Connacht League finals on April 25 in the Galway Lawn Tennis Club.
The results of the finals were: Division 1 sponsored by Carrolls 4x4: Boyle beat Cortoon 4-3; Division 2 sponsored by Aran Sports: Claregalway beat Oranmore 4-1; Division 3 sponsored by PC Dock: Claregalway beat Loughrea 4-1; Division 4 sponsored by Egan Electrical: Cortoon beat GLTC 4-1; Division 5 sponsored by Lydons Furniture: Loughrea beat Furbo 5-2; Division 6 sponsored by Old Monastery: Oughterard beat Loughrea 4-2.
