Injury halts Rooney’s title bid

Scottish No 1 Alan Clyne was the winner of this year’s West of Ireland Squash Championship held over the Easter at the Galway Lawn Tennis Club.

Clyne, ranked 65 in the world, defeated the Dutch number one and world-ranked 93 Pierdro Schweertman 3-0 in the final to win the coveted Paddy ‘Whack’ Walsh cup.

Galway’s hope, John Rooney, returning home for the first time since claiming the Irish title, suffered an ankle injury on the eve of the tournament when playing a league match in England. Although the Irish No 2 agreed to travel to Galway, his injury clearly hampered his game, losing his first round match.

In the graded event, which forms part of the Irish squash senior tour, Laura Mylotte won the ladies’ event, defeating Victoria Bell from England 3-1, while Niall Rooney from Salthill won the men’s A section, defeating Neil Martin from Belfast 3-0 - ensuring the home club held onto two titles for another year.
