Man rescued from headland at Silver Strand

Galway RNLI Lifeboat was called to the aid of a man who became trapped by rising tide on a headland between Blackrock and Silver Strand on Sunday.

The man had set off from the caravan park beyond Blackrock on Sunday afternoon for a walk along the shoreline towards Silver Strand but he went out too far and got caught in the rising tide on his return.

He was carrying his mobile phone and was able to dial the emergency services which requested the lifeboat’s assistance.

Galway RNLI Lifeboat launched at approximately 5pm and communicated directly with the man to find his exact location. He did not require medical attention and the crew brought him safely ashore.

Lifeboat operations manager Mike Swan has urged people to be careful when out walking on the shore at this time of year. “The evenings are getting longer and when you’re out there you can easily lose track of time,” he warned. “The tide comes in very fast and catches people unawares.”

The crew on the callout were helmsman David Oliver, Adrian Phillips, John Byrne, and Olivia Byrne.
