Spirit of Africa Day Schools Soccer Cup

The Spirit of Africa Day Schools Soccer Cup will take place at Mervue United AFC pitch on Friday May 21 from 10am until 2pm.

The event is being organised by Spirit of Voice productions and there will be prizes available for winners, players, and best school team jersey design

The tournament is supported by the FAI intercultural programme community development, Irish Aid, Galway City Sports Partnership, and Power Soccer School of excellence.

Organiser Gerry Mulkerrins said boys and girls school players aged eight and nine are invited to take part to represent an African nation in the series of ‘World Cup final’ games as a way of celebrating Africa Day.

Participating schools will also receive a free educational guest visit to the classroom from the African community, together with cultural art and music workshops and soccer shirts.

An evening music concert is also planned for Tuesday May 25 in The Quays featuring Galway's African calypso group The Toluking Band, who will launching their latest CD Story Story. Also performing will be the rhythm poets Lucky & Friends. There will also be a fashion show and a performance by a dance group.
