Local national badminton champion John Rooney returns to the city this weekend to contest the West of Ireland Squash Open.
Sponsored by Garavan’s Bar, the tournament, now in its fourth year, will be held in Galway Lawn Tennis Club.
A strong line-up is promised, including Salthill’s Rooney, who is hoping to reclaim the Paddy ‘Whack’ Walsh trophy he last won in 2007. This is Rooney’s first visit to his home courts since winning the Irish national championships.
Current world ranked 75, Rooney is seeded number two for the event - the number one seed is the current Scottish national champions and world number 63 Alan Clyne. Other players to watch are Aqeel Rehman, who the current Austrian national champion, the Irish number two and runner up in this year’s national championships Arthur Gaskin, and the experienced Italian champion Jose Facchini.
The event gets under way this evening and continues throughout the weekend with the final scheduled for 2pm on Easter Sunday. Admission is free.
