Gardaí are appealing to motorists to exercise caution on the roads during the Bank Holiday weekend as the Garda prepares to embark on a road safety drive over the holiday.
Garda checkpoints will be in operation over the weekend and gardaí have called on motorists to adapt their driving behaviour to the driving conditions and to ensure they do not endanger themselves or others on the road.
Motorists are being warned that speed is the greatest single contributory factor to deaths and serious injuries on the roads. Gardaí are reminding drivers that the speed limit is a limit, not a target, and motorists are advised to adapt their speed to conditions such as road type, weather, and traffic volumes.
The Bank Holiday weekend road safety campaign will see gardaí targeting those drivers who exceed the speed limit.
Drivers are being asked to give themselves ample time for long journeys, and to refrain from driving when tired. Motorists should pay attention to the speed limits, particularly in built-up areas.
Cyclists and pedestrians are asked to wear appropriate clothing when travelling in the dark. Cyclists should ensure they adhere to the rules of the road, and bikes should be fitted with front and rear lights. Motorists are asked to be conscious of cyclists and pedestrians using the roads.
Thirty nine people have died on Irish roads so far this year.
