Toddler dies in tragic fall from apartment

A 16-month-old toddler who died after falling from a second-floor city centre apartment at the weekend has been named locally as Oskars Dauksts.

The little boy, the son of a Latvian mother and Irish father, was rushed to hospital after sustaining serious injuries in a fall from the second floor window of an apartment at Lydon Court, Irwin’s Lane, early on Saturday.

It is believed that the tragic accident happened when the boy crawled out of the window and plunged to the ground below. The alarm was raised at around 9.45am by his distraught mother.

Oskars was first treated at University Hospital Galway but later transferred to Temple Street Children’s Hospital in Dublin. His parents held a constant bedside vigil while their little boy battled for his life in the intensive care unit at the hospital. Tragically, Oskars died from his injuries at 2.30am on Monday. A post mortem was later carried out.

Both Gardai and ambulances were at the scene of the accident on Saturday within minutes. The immediate area around the scene of the accident was sealed off by gardai for examination. It was later revealed that gardai are treating the incident as an accident.

Touching floral tributes were laid on the street outside Cafe Zealous which is close to where Oskars had fallen.
