THE ENGLISH composer John Stainer was described by Sir Arthur Sullivan, of Gilbert & Sullivan fame, as “a genius”, and Co Galway will get to experience his music on Passion Sunday.
The Michaellian Ensemble will present and perform The Crucifixion - A Meditation on the Sacred Passion of the Holy Redeemer by John Stainer (1840-1901 ) this Sunday in St Michael’s Church, Ballinasloe, at 7.30pm.
The work is a meditation for solo voices, tenors and basses, and chorus, and interspersed with hymns with grand organ accompaniment. The Michaellian Ensemble is an amateur choir of 50 with Michael McCullagh as the choirmaster and conductor.
Admission is free and there will be a basket collection for Ballinasloe Wheelchair and Galway Hospice. A professional video of the performance has been commissioned and will be on sale at Christmas.
