Greenfields Hockey Club women’s X1 fell at the final hurdle in their first Irish Hockey Cup final.
Up against Limerick's Catholic Institute, Greenfields were denied making club history when going down by 3 - 1 on Sunday.
Institute raced out of the blocks and created a number of good attacks in the first 10 minutes, one of which resulted in a short corner which was switched left for Elaine Bronwell to hit a powerful drive into the net. Further corners followed for Institute and within another 10 minutes, they had bagged another goal.
Greenfields regrouped quickly with Dora Gorman showing pace and skill going forward as the game opened up. Coming strongly through at the edge of the circle, she was dragged down in a tackle, and awarded a penalty stroke. This was slotted neatly away to the right hand corner by Brenda Flannery.
Going into the second half, with a score of 2-1, it was all to play for. Institute came out strongly, and Greenfields defended valiantly. Following one of many corner moves, Institute succeded in hitting the back board for the third time.
Despite some well-executed attacking moves from Greenfields, their chances were denied, and as the final hooter sounded Greenfields saw their bid for a first ever Irish hockey trophy title dashed.
