The head of a mission hospital in Zambia outlined the work carried out at the facility in a special lecture held at NUI Galway last night.
Tuesday Musaka, director of Mpongwe Baptist association Zambia, delivered the Goretti Hanrahan memorial lecture last night (Wednesday ) at the Fottrell Theatre. The free event looked at work carried out at the Mpongwe mission hospital, a regular destination for Voluntary Services Abroad (VSA ) volunteers.
Mpongwe mission hospital provides essential care for the Mpongwe district and is vital in the treatment of many people affected with HIV/AIDS, malaria, tuberculosis and other medical conditions.
VSA has been sending volunteers to the hospital for almost a decade and this relationship was firmly cemented two years ago when volunteers built “The Colbert Clinic” on the grounds of the hospital in honour of VSA’s founder Galway graduate Dr Dom Colbert.
VSA is an NUI Galway based charity. Its medical student members bring medical supplies to developing countries and assist in healthcare delivery to some of the most deprived people in the world.
Volunteers fund their own travel and accommodation expenses allowing funds to be used to help hospitals and clinics.
The talk was in memory of Goretti Hanrahan who died while volunteering with VSA.
