Galway’s two representatives in the Airtricity first division, Salthill Devon and Mervue United, will be hoping for better results in tomorrow’s third round.
Salthill Devon, 2-0 losers to Finn Harps last weekend, face another difficult assignment away to Shelbourne, while Mervue, who went down to Athlone Town by 1 - 0, enjoy a home tie with Wexford Youths
Mervue manager Tom French had made three changes to the side which drew with Limerick in the league opener, with the experienced trio of Nicky Curran, David O’Dowd and Ollie Keogh starting their first game of the season.
"Overall I was happy with the performance, but disappointed with the result,” said French. “ I thought we deserved at least a draw, but if you don’t put away your chances, that’s what happens.
“The lads worked hard all over the park and I thought we handled what they threw at us reasonably well. Unfortunately one of our lads got out-jumped for their goal. I thought we improved again on our previous performance and know that we will get better as we go along. In the end we couldn’t find that all important equaliser.”
French is now looking to tomorrow evening’s home tie against Wexford Youths to grab that important first win.
