Most Galway TDs own some property or land in Galway city or county, but unlike Fianna Fáil TD Frank Fahey, none of them owns property in France, Belgium, the USA, or Dubai.
The extent of Dep Fahey’s property interests are detailed in the Register of Interests of Members of Dáil Éireann, which was published recently.
The figures cover the period from January 1 2001 to December 31 2009 and are available to download and view by the public on the Oireachtas’ official website, www.oireachtas.ie The report gives details on all 166 TDs and contains information on each elected member’s occupational income, shares, directorships, land, gifts received, property and service, travel facilities, remunerated position, and contracts. All nine Galway TDs are included in the register.
The register shows that Fianna Fáil Galway West TD Frank Fahey is receiving rental income from his property holdings, income from capital gains from the sale of property, and income from shareholdings in Ryanair, IL & P, Aviva, and Eircom.
The register outlines Dep Fahy’s property interests. It says he is letting apartments in Castlerea, Co Roscommon; Cathedral Place, Limerick; and in both Eglinton Court and Dun Aengus, New Docks, in Galway city.
He is also letting out a house in Kilbeacanty, Gort; Dun na Coiribe, Galway and in Rinawade Close, Leixlip.
Dep Fahey is shareholding in an apartment at Gort na Coiribe, Galway; at extended family owned properties at Moydrum, Athlone; in four apartments and a shop in Lower Gerald Street, Limerick; and in a retail unit, two offices, and warehouse at Crowe Street, Gort. He is also shareholding in an apartment at Tappen Street, Boston, Massachusetts (shareholding in Fahey Higgins LLC Boston ).
He owns a house at Jumeirah Estates, Dubai; in The Grove, Crowe Street, Gort, Co. Galway; and in Villefranche, France; as well as an apartment at Irishtown, Dublin.
In partnership with others Mr Fahey owns five apartments at the Rue Paul-Emile, Janson 1000 and 10 apartments at Rue du Sceptre 1015 in Brussels. Mr Fahey has also paid a deposit and signed a contract on property at Porto De Mos while a deposit has been paid on property at Alcantarillha, Portugal.
Independent TD Noel Grealish was listed as the company director of GGC Galway Glass Centre, Briarhill Business Park, Briarhill, according to the register. It also showed that he owns all shares in the business.
As regards property the register details that he owns a house in Cregmore, Claregalway, which is rented out; 15 acres of farmland in Carnmore; 8,800 feet of a commercial unit in Briarhill Business Park; and a holiday home in Canet, France.
Fine Gael’s Galway West TD Pádraic McCormack is, according to the register, the landlord of a house at Forster Court, Galway and that he also owns land at this address.
However the remaining Galway West TDs, the Minister for Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs Éamon Ó Cuív and Labour party president Michael D Higgins, were both shown to have no occupational income, shares, directorships, land, gifts received, property and service, travel facilities, remunerated position, or contracts.
Galway East Fianna Fáil TD Noel Treacy is shown in the register to have shares in First Active PLC, FBD, and Vodafone PLC. He owns land at Cross Street, Athenry (which is his constituency office ) and a small family farm in Gurteen, Ballinasloe.
The constituency’s other Fianna Fáil TD, Michael Kitt, is receiving a primary teacher’s pension from Menlough national school in Ballinasloe and severance pay in respect of his position as Minister of State in the Department of the Environment up to April 2009.
The register also shows that he has 630 shares in Irish Life and Permanent (Permanent TSB ) and 160 shares in Vodafone Ireland Plc.
Fine Gael TD Paul Connaughton is listed as under occupational income as being a farmer in Ballinless, Mountbellew, Ballinasloe. The register says he jointly owns the 92 acres with his wife. His party colleague Ulick Burke is listed as receiving a “reduced retired pension” from the Department of Education.
