MATTU NOONE left behind a career in playing angst ridden rock bands in Australia when he discovered an exotic instrument in India - the 25 stringed sarod.
Since 2004 he has lived on and off in Kolkata, Benghal, learning the instrument, which is a distant cousin of the sitar. Practising up to 12 hours a day, he has dedicated himself to learning the subtle intricacies of raga.
In 2006 Mattu came to Ireland to do workshops on north Indian classical music and to form a project using Western instruments. The result of this was The Bahh Band. Bahh is a Bengali word to express the inexpressible.
Since their inception, the band has played in yoga and meditation centres, boisterous trad sessions in Co Galway, anarchist clubs in Italy, and on the main stage in the Body and Soul area at Electric Picnic.
The Bahh Band will release a new limited edition EP with a concert in the Druid Lane Theatre on Friday March 19 at 8pm. The concert will feature video projections alongside the Bahh’s heady mix of Indian classical, Eastern European folk, Irish trad, blues, and post-rock.
