Galway father and daughter head west to help build homes in Haiti

A Galway father and daughter team, Ben and Karen Wrafter, will be among the 250 volunteers travelling to Haiti to help the Haven charity build homes in the earthquake stricken nation.

Ben has travelled to Haiti on numerous other occasions and volunteered with Haven last October. Next month he will be going back with his 22-year-old daughter Karen Wrafter. Once Karen has finished her work with Haven, she will continue on to Port au Prince where she will spend three months working with victims of the earthquake.

Each Haven volunteer must raise €4,000 to be eligible for the volunteer programme so Ben and Karen will be running a series of fund raising events in the coming weeks.

There will be a table quiz in the Huntsman Inn today, a coffee morning in the NUI, Galway Library tomorrow, and a bucket collection throughout Galway city centre on Saturday.

Haven is an Irish charity established in 2008 by Leslie Buckley. It seeks to train, up-skill, and employ Haitian people to build homes all year round. In this way, Haven is creating jobs in a country where unemployment stands at more than 50 per cent and opportunities are few.

Direct donations can be made and more information is available on www.havenpartnership.com or from Ben and Karen on 087 - 9640869.
