CLUB ÁRUS na nGael will host a night of poetry as Gaeilge, featuring Máire Holmes, Colette Nic Aodha, and Seosamh Ó Guairim, on Tuesday at 8.15pm as part of Seachtain na Gaeilge.
Writing in Irish and English, Máire Holmes is a poet, playwright, and broadcaster. Her poetry is widely published in both languages and her Irish is part of the Leaving Cert course. Her collection Dúrún is published by Coiscéim. Her plays include The Butterfly Who Couldn’t Dance, Fáinne, and Holydaze presented by an Taibhdhearc, Galway. She has received a number of awards, including a Hennessy Award for Literature in Short Stories.
Colette Nic Aodha also writes in Irish and English. Her poetry collections include Baill Seirce (1998 ), Faoi Chrann Cnó Capaill (2000 ), Between Curses/Bainne Géar (2007 ); and Scéal ón Oirthir (2009 ). Her short stories are collected as Ádh Mór (2004 ).
Seosamh O Guairim is a poet as well as being the postman in Carna, Connemara. His publications include Trá Thaoile na nÉan (1986 ) and Croi na Cloiche (1995 ), which has been translated into Romanian. His work has been broadcast widely by RTÉ and TG4 and he appeared on the EuroNews TV reciting his work.
Gabriel Rosenstock has praised his work, saying: “Ancient aged voices echo through that of Seosamh Ó Guairim as he grapples with numerous problems of this modern world...Ó Guairim’s is one of the most poignant voices of Connemara.”
Admission is €5/3 and there will be tea, coffee, and biscuits served.
