Fundraising event for Afghan women

The Revolutionary Association of the Women of Afghanistan is a political/social organisation struggling for peace, freedom, democracy, and women’s rights in Afghanistan since 1977.

Every day in the fundamentalist and war blighted nation, RAWA members risk life and limb on a daily basis to offer young girls an education. This work has to be done in secret, as the ruling warlords, like the Taliban, oppose schools for girls.

To mark International Women’s Day, the Galway Alliance Against War will hold a fundraiser for RAWA in The Rowing Club, Woodquay, tomorrow at 9pm. There will be music, song, films, food, and a ceili/disco. Admission is €5.

“The Afghan war is not a ‘good war’,” said GAAW spokesperson Niall Farrell. “The forces of occupation, including Irish troops, under NATO command have replaced the medieval regime of the Taliban with a brutal regime of the fundamentalist warlords of the Northern Alliance, who are as criminal, ignorant, anti-women, and anti-democracy as the Taliban.”
