The days of GMIT students parking their cars along the roads and in the estates outside the college are numbered as traffic restrictions in these areas will be in place in the coming weeks.
When the GMIT introduced pay and display parking on campus, many students took to parking on the roads and estates surrounding the college.
This has resulted in traffic congestion, restricted movement in the Ballybane area, St James Road in Mervue, and in Bayview Rise and Bayview Heights. In some cases residents were unable to enter or exit their properties.
Residents approached Fine Gael councillor Brian Walsh and he made a request to the Galway City Council to tackle the issue.
Cllr Walsh this week received a commitment from the city council’s roads department that parking restrictions, in the form of double yellow lines, in residential areas adjacent to GMIT will be in place “within a matter of weeks”. Cllr Walsh has welcomed the news.
