A taxi driver accused of sexually assaulting a young woman in the city last week was remanded on bail with strict conditions at Galway District Court on Monday.
The 34-year-old man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, first came before the court at a special sitting last Friday where he was charged with the sexual assault of a woman at Inchagoill Road, Newcastle, on February 24, 2010. Consent was given for bail being granted with an independent surety of €4,000 by a person to be approved by the court.
Bail was also to be granted on strict conditions that the accused man sign on at Galway Garda Station three days a week between 9pm and 9am, reside at the address furnished to gardai, not interfere with the injured party or witnesses, abide by a curfew between 10pm and 7am, and that he hand over his passport and not apply for another passport or any other travel documents.
Defence solicitor Olivia Traynor told Judge Mary Fahy that her client was now able to take up bail as there was a person willing to provide independent surety.
Inspector Mick Coppinger asked that the accused man make himself available at home during the time of the curfew. He further requested that the matter be adjourned to allow time for DPP directions.
Judge Fahy ordered that the man be remanded on his own bail to appear in court again on March 26.
