AVERAGE Arts Initiative holds first Galway exhibition

TO LET is the title of a new exhibition from the AVERAGE Arts Initiative which opens on Thursday March 4 at 7pm in 39 Atlantic House, Prospect Hill.

AVERAGE Arts Initiative is an artist-led initiative interested in using the growing number of vacant buildings around Galway for the purpose of short-term exhibition spaces.

The use of vacant buildings for exhibitions is a growing international trend, and one that has been extremely successful. Projects such as Swing Space in New York, the Caretaker Project in Britain, and the Renew Newcastle Project in Australia have gained international acclaim for their work in transforming areas hurt by the economic downturn into thriving community developments both for the arts and for the local economy.

AVERAGE Arts Initiative is interested in doing the same in Galway. “We hope to further the relationship between the art and business sectors by bringing this contemporary international trend to Galway,” the group says.

The group members are Cathal Duane, Vivien Pyroth, Alma McCarney, Florence O’Meara, Eimhin Hawes, Paul McGuigan, James Ward, Conall Cary, and Iain McEllin.
