•Galway-born golfer Alison Walshe, who recently decided to represent Ireland, has received a grant from the Team Ireland Golf Trust. Walshe, who was born in Galway but grew up in Massachesetts after her family emigrated when she was four, was one of four golfers who received of €20,000 from grants totaling €217,000 for 17 aspiring golfers. Walshe (24 ) recently declared she would represent Ireland in the Solheim Cup - women's golf version of the Ryder Cup.

• Defending schools rugby champions Coláiste Iognáid have advanced to the semi-finals of the Connacht Tribune Senior Schools Cup following a 9 - 3 win over Garbally College Three penalties from outhalf Robert Butler was enough to see them through, having led by 3 - 0 at the break. The quarter-final between the Bish and Gallen is scheduled to take place on Saturday in Newcastle, while the junior cup semi-final between Calasanctius Oranmore and Summerhill takes place today at 1.30pm.

•With Connacht hooker Sean Cronin making the bench in Declan Kidney’s Irish team that takes on England this weekend, there was more good news for the province with prop Jamie Hagan extending his contract for another season.
