Music For Galway ‘in danger of disappearing’

Music For Galway, which organises classical music concerts, recitals, and events for the city is “in danger of disappearing” after its Arts Council funding was slashed by 35 per cent.

The organisation, which is approaching its 30th season, recently saw its funding cut from €62,000 to €40,000.

Although this would seem a generous donation of funds from the Arts Council, MFG point out that it has eight further concerts to stage between now and the end of May.

“After that it is open to question as to whether there will be enough funds left for the programming of the start of the 30th anniversary season in September” a spokesperson said. “While the Arts Council continues to maintain that the organisation is vital to the cultural fabric of the country, it has now dealt an almost fatal blow to the organisation.”

MFG traditionally relies on voluntary input by its voluntary board and voluntary artistic director. The only paid position has been that of its part time executive officer.

As a result MFG is calling on the public to help support the organisation. People can do so by “attending as many concerts as possible and bringing as many friends as possible”.

“Ticket sales might not only make the difference in terms of money, but will also send a clear message that yes, we want to continue,” the spokesperson said.

Support can also be shown by becoming a fan of MFG on Facebook and leaving a message of support, alternatively e-mail [email protected] or post it to Music for Galway, C/O GMIT, Cluain Mhuire, Monivea Road, Galway.

Support can also be shown by joining MFG as a member. Membership for the spring season costs €25 and gives an entitlement to €4 off concert tickets, as well as an invitation to the members’ surprise concert on Tuesday March 9.

The full programme is available at www.musicforgalway.ie or can be obtained from the office. Tickets and memberships are also available through the office, 091 - 705962, with tickets also from Opus II, the Cornstore, or online at www.tht.ie
