How should Ireland be run?

CIPD seminar to provide fascinating insight

Opinions on how Ireland should be run will be aired next week when the Western region of the Chartered Institute of Personal and Development (CIPD ) will hold its annual conference at GMIT.

The ‘Leadership – Strategy to Execution’ will be headlined by economist David McWilliams who will address the Government directly by demonstrating his strategy in the very topical ‘How To Run Your Country’ and how his plan should be executed.

Also addressing the conference will be founder and chairman of O’Brien’s Irish Sandwich Bars, Brody Sweeney. Since opening their first store in 1988, Brody and his management team have successfully opened more than 300 outlets worldwide with some 110 outlets in Ireland, making his company one of Ireland’s successful export brands. Brody is one of Ireland’s best known entrepreneurs and a much sought-after speaker on entrepreneurship, leadership, CSR, and motivation at events in Ireland and the UK.

The event will run from 9.30am -3.00pm at GMIT and will also feature three local speakers, Deirdre McHugh, law lecturer, GMIT, Joe Howley assistant secretary, Head of Revenue’s Border Midlands West Region; and Evelyn O'Toole, Managing Director of Complete Laboratory Solutions (CLS ).

Ms McHugh is a founder member of 353 management and legal Training Services based in Galway servicing the entire country. She will discuss how ensuring an understanding of a business’s legal compliance obligations, through correct leadership, can save on costly litigation.

Mr Howley’s presentation will illustrate how Revenue, as a large organisation, found that there was a mis-match between its structure and its strategy. It will demonstrate how Revenue developed a new, customer-focused strategy and then completely dismantled the organisation.

He will explain the new strategy and how it has been executed through building an entirely new structure for the organisation with a particular focus on leadership, change management and managead risk-taking

Evelyn O’Toole, a native of Clifden, is the managing director of Complete Laboratory Solutions (CLS ) she will speak on how her company has become one of Ireland’s leading contract laboratories. CLS provides micro and chemistry testing, supplies trained analysts to industry on contract, health screening, and R & D.

Tickets for the conference are €125 and bookings before Friday October 3 will receive a ticket to the CIPD gala dinner dance sponsored by CCP Recruitment and held later that night in the Clayton Hotel.

This is based on a “First-come-first-served” basis – so book early.
