THE GALWAY based artist Amit Mediratta has been awarded the prestigious Peel Prize for English Composition, 2009-10, by NUI, Galway.
Founded originally by Sir Robert Peel, a prize of €1,000 is awarded annually for excellence in the discipline of English. Amit was awarded the prize for his essay on tragedy in Greek and Irish theatre, analysing, specifically, Sophocles’ Oedipus Rex and Marina Carr’s By The Bog of Cats. The work was selected from more than 590 essays.
