Galway lecturer raises €40,000 for Haiti in box stunt

A lecturer at NUI Galway who pulled off a David Blaine-style fundraising stunt in which he was suspended in a Perspex box has managed to raise almost €40,000 for Haiti.

The Hoisted for Haiti stunt, which took place from last Friday until Sunday afternoon, saw 29-year-old Conor O’Kane spending a taxing 48 hours suspended a few metres over a square in his home town of Fermoy.

The Perspex box, which was 8ft by 4ft in width, and 6ft high, only contained a sleeping bag, a book, a mobile phone, a chair, and a bucket. The stunt is reminiscent of a stunt carried out by US magician David Blaine in London seven years ago.

It is hoped that this fundraiser, in conjunction with the Haven initiative, will help send skilled tradespeople on a house-building missing to Haiti in October.

Further donations can been made to the Hoisted for Haiti bank account at AIB. The bank sort code is 93-60-82 and the account number is 20098098.
