A Limerick man, with 63 previous convictions, had a close shave this week when he avoided having to serve extra jail time after stealing more than €170 worth of razors.
Dermot Kelly (26 ) with an address at 6 Maple Court, Kennedy Park, Limerick, appeared at Galway District Court last Monday and pleaded guilty to stealing razors, valued at €178.37, from Dunnes Stores in Edward Square, Galway, on August 6, 2008
Inspector Sean Glynn told the court that at 3.40pm the defendant grabbed a “handful of razors” and put them in a bag and left the store.
Defence solicitor Valerie Corcoran said that her client had just finished a six month sentence and was out a short time when he went to visit his cousin. The defendant, who has difficulties with alcohol, is also currently serving a 10 month sentence, back dated to June 10, and went into custody the day after this incident.
Ms Corcoran said that Kelly’s mother is “unwell with cancer” and he wants to serve his sentence so he can “spend time with her”. She added that the goods were recovered.
Judge Mary Fahy imposed a two month sentence to run concurrently with the sentence already being served.
