Recycling your favourite pieces

Part one — the jacket

In a recent article I wrote for this style column, I mentioned that 2010 would be the year of recycling your clothes. This means wearing your favourite pieces more often by creating various looks using style tricks.

Take a jacket that is left in the back of your wardrobe that you love but you cannot figure out what to wear it with. Here are two simple steps to follow to recycle it.

First, look at the colours: If the jacket has neutral colours you will have more possibilities to combine different colours, whether they are neutrals or more vibrant. If the jacket has patterns and more vibrant colours, then match it with items in plain or neutral colours, whether it is a dress, a top, a trouser, or a skirt. Secondly, look at the patterns. If the jacket has a strong pattern then keep the rest of the outfit plain or stick to smaller patterns. If the jacket is a block colour then you are free to wear any patterns you wish.

Finally, decide two possible combinations of outfits you can create: The first one can be a dress with ankle boots, teamed with a statement neckpiece and an handbag. The second combination could be jeans, a top, pumps, and scarf.

This is where you decide on how many accessorises you want to include onto your look. Always accessorise at the end.

You will be able to create even more looks just by following the same rules.

I chose this gold leather jacket from Marks and Spencer as my staple piece. For the first look I have teamed it with a this patterned dress from Zara, ankle shoes from Marks and Spencer, and a bag from Accessorize.

For the second look I chose this pair of jeans from Karen Millen and I teamed it with a blouse from Zara, this pair of heels from River Island, and a scarf from Accessorize.
