Tough start for Galway ladies

Galway ladies begin their season when the Bord Gais Energy National Ladies Football League kicks off on Sunday.

First up for Galway is a tough away trip to Castleisland to take on Kerry (1pm ) which will provide a stern test for this season’s squad.

Galway’s star has waned over the last few years since making the breakthrough in 2004. Last year they recorded just a single win from the league campaign, but notched a morale-boosting victory over Mayo to reclaim the Connacht crown. However they bowed out of the championship at the quarter-final stage when falling to Monaghan for a second time - a team they will face again in this season’s newly constructed league.

Although the weather in the last two months has not been not conducive to outdoor training, Galway have prepared with a challenge game against NUIG. This was a keenly contested challenge with the county just shading it.

However there will be harder challenges to face in the next month. Division 1 has been reduced to eight teams from the 12 that competed in the top division in 2009, comprising

Cork, Dublin, Kerry, Galway. Laois, Mayo, Monaghan and Tyrone will compete for the Division 1 title.

The current league holders are Cork who Galway face next month, also away before a meeting against 2009 finalists Dublin next week.

Galway NFL fixtures: February 7, Kerry v Galway; February 14, Dublin v Galway; February 21, Galway v Tyrone; March 7, Cork v Galway; March 13, Galway v Laois; March 28, Galway v Mayo; April 11, Monaghan v Galway.
