Road through forest park removed from development plan

City councillors gave short shrift to a plan by the Galway City Council to construct a link road between the Quincenntenial Bridge and Dyke Road at a recent meeting in City Hall.

Councillors backed a motion by Labour’s Derek Nolan to delete construction of the road from the draft Galway City Development Plan 2011-2017. More than 10,000 people had signed a petition against the link road.

“The proposed road would have done major damage to the Terryland Forest Park, a key recreational and ecological amenity to the city,” said Cllr Nolan. “It would have represented a terrible betrayal to the community and the hundreds of volunteers in the city who spent days planting the trees that create the park.”

Cllr Nolan said the proposed link road made no sense “from a road traffic point of view”. He said: “Placing a traffic light junction on the bridge would surely have worsened traffic flow on the city’s busiest bridge, rather than improving it
