O’Flaherty wants to see more bins throughout the city

The new large dustbins which are situated both on the Salthill Promenade and the city centre are welcome but they need to be emptied regularly and more need to be installed.

This is the view of Independent councillor Terry O’Flaherty who is calling on the Galway City Council to invest in more of these bins “as a matter of priority”.

The new bins are a joint initiative between the council and the Vocational and Educational Committee. The bins were made in the Sandy Road Centre by Community and Employment scheme workers and students in the centre as a work experience project for the woodwork class.

The bins cost c€300 each which Cllr O’Flaherty said is “very reasonable” considering “the amount of rubbish that can fit into them” and that they are “keeping people employed”.

“We should be installing more of these bins throughout the city,” she said, “and considering they only have to be emptied once a week which makes sense.”
