A ‘MANTRUM’ is the term for when a grown man throws a tantrum when he cannot have his way. It’s also the name of an exciting jazz quintet who play Galway tomorrow.
Mantrum play Campbell’s Tavern, Cloughanover, Headford, tomorrow at 10pm. The band are Swedish saxophonists Thomas Backman and Nils Berg, and Irish jazzers Cormac O’Brien (bass ), Shane O’Donovan (drums ), Shane Latimer (guitar ).
The quintet came together during an adventurous, no holds barred, jam session at last year’s 12 Points Festival. The band’s approach to jazz is one of ‘non-idiomatic improvisation’ which allows for (in the band’s own words ) “maximum spontaneity and invention built around deformed pop hooks and deceptive grooves”.
