CoisCéim Dance to mix Superman and Nijinsky

COISCÉIM DANCE Theatre is celebrating 15 years of award-winning productions this year and to mark the occasion it is bringing two new dance works, As You Are and Faun, around the country.

As You Are directed by CoisCéim dancer Muirne Bloomer and Faun directed by CoisCéim artistic director David Bolger, will be performed in the Town Hall Theatre on Tuesday January 26 at 8pm.

As You Are poses the question; Who would you rather be: Superman or Clarke Kent? We all want to stand out from the crowd, but are we willing to pay the price? Six dancers will be tested to the limit as they struggle for control over themselves and each other.

Nijinsky was worshipped as the greatest dancer of the 20th century, but audiences rioted when they saw his first ballet, L’après midi d’un Faune. It is hard to tell what shocked them most, the bare feet, shameless sensuality, or revolutionary dance style.

Mixing Debussy’s famous score with music by Queen (Freddie Mercury famously reprised Nijinsky’s ...Faune dance sequence in the video for ‘I Want To Break Free’ ), David Bolger takes Nijinsky's iconic ballet and explores how dance still reconnects us with our feelings and imagination. If nothing shocks us any more, how can we ever really break free?

Lighting for the shows will be by Lucy Carter, costumes by Paul Shriek, and sound by Ivan Birthistle and Vincent Doherty. The dancers will be James Hosty, Robert Jackson, Eddie Kay, Megan Kennedy, Lisa McLoughlin, and Emma O’Kane.

Tickets are available from the Town Hall on 091 - 569777. See also www.coisceim.com
