Sporting stars and their trophies raise funds for charity

More than €2,000 was raised for Alan Kerins African Projects at the recent Stars and Cups fundraising event in Supermac’s, Eyre Square.

Some of the major sporting cups in the country including the Heineken Cup, the Liam McCarthy and the Sam Maguire cups were on display for the public.

Members of the current Galway senior hurling and football teams joined members of the last teams to bring the Liam McCarthy and Sam Maguire cups to the county. They were joined by members of the current All-Ireland winning Galway minor hurling team with the Irish Press Cup. Portumna’s winning senior hurlers were also present with the Tommy Moore and the Tom Callenan cups as were Corofin with the Connacht Shane McGettigan Memorial Cup and Frank Fox Cup. Guests included Martin Comerford of the current All-Ireland winning Kilkenny senior hurling team and Cyril Farrell, former Galway hurling manager.

Alan Kerins, founder of Alan Kerins African Projects, said: We were awestruck at the number of people who turned out to support the charity. This has been a fantastic boost for all the volunteers who lend their time and talents to Alan Kerins African Projects, putting in long hours to ensure we achieve the objectives laid out for us.

“We recognise that 2010 will be a challenging year for everyone. The charity offers a light of hope to our brothers and sisters in Africa who otherwise would be forgotten. The people of Galway have again shown their great generosity which will go towards the educational, sporting and community-based centre in Zambia, a vital project we are working on at the moment.”
