Funding has been made available for new public toilets at the Galway Cathedral through the Galway City Council budget.
The news has been welcomed by Labour councillor Billy Cameron, who was approached some 12 months ago by Monsignor O’Flaherty and members of the cathedral parish council in an attempt to secure funding on this issue.
“There has been an ongoing problem for the last few years with bus commuters and tourists using the internal cathedral toilets,” he said.
“The cathedral has become a major tourist attraction during the summer months and many of these tourists wanted to spend a penny, but in the long run costing the cathedral because of water charges.”
