The Galway University Hospitals Arts Trust has launched a 2010 calendar featuring artwork by patients of Unit 5 and Unit 6 of Merlin Park University Hospital.
The GUH Arts Trust supports and enhances the patient environment in Galway’s public hospitals. The purchase of the calendar directly supports the arts programme in the geriatric units of Galway University Hospitals.
The paintings in the calendar are representative of the hundreds of artworks produced by patients each year in the Art Angel Arts Programme.
The aim of Art Angel is to help older people in hospital explore and develop their own creativity and express themselves freely through art. The artists visit Merlin Park twice a week where patients work on art to exhibit in the geriatric units and throughout the hospitals.
“Artists Tricia and Anna McCarthy who work on the visual art programme in the hospital have brought tremendous creativity, skill, flexibility and commitment to their work with patients,” said a GUH spokesperson.
Other activities include creative writing and reminiscence with poet Kevin Higgins;drama and music with the Gombeens; drumming with Ben Coombs; and various arts projects with artists Ceara Conway and Jennie Moran.
The calendar costs €10 and is available from the shops and restaurants in GUH and Merlin Park or alternatively contact the Arts Office on 091 - 544979 or email [email protected]
