A young Galway woman died of natural causes while holidaying in Cameroon, according to the Department of Foreign Affairs.
The department yesterday confirmed that the body found in Yaounda, Cameroon, in Africa, on January 2 is that of Galway city native Laura Thornton.
It is believed that Ms Thornton, who was single and in her 30s, had been holidaying in the area and had been travelling alone.
The Department of Foreign Affairs is providing consular assistance to the family.
Many tributes were paid on Ms Thornton’s Facebook page. One friend wrote: “There are not enough words to describe how special you are and how much you will be missed by those who loved you.” Another friend wrote: “Your warm heart and big smile were always a joy to encounter lovely Laura. Keep shining your light.”
