Joe Steve Ó Neachtain to launch new book of short stories

SALANN GARBH, a new collection of short stories from the writer and actor Joe Steve Ó Neachtain will be launched this evening at 8.30pm in the Park Lodge Hotel in An Spidéal.

Salann Garbh, which translates as ‘Coarse Salt’ is published by Cló Iar-Chonnachta and sees Ó Neachtain tackling social and moral questions through stories centred on small local events. The collection covers domestic violence, faith, lineage, and land ownership.

Born in An Chré Dhubh in An Spidéal in 1942, Ó Neachtain has been writing creatively since 1969. His radio drama series Baile an Droichid, ran on Raidió na Gaeltachta from 1986 to 1996, and received a Jacobs Award. His collection Cloch Mhóin (1998 ) received Cló Iar-Chonnachta’s literary award in 1998 and was nominated for The Irish Times Literary Prize the following year. This year An tOireachtas awarded him Actor of the Year for his role as Peadar in TG4’s Ros na Rún. He lives in An Chré Dhubh with his wife Máirín, with whom he has three children.
