Christmas lights to be switched on this Saturday evening

Galway city centre will be filled with the spirit of Christmas this Saturday when the city centre’s Christmas lights are officially switched on at 5pm.

On that evening, vintage cars will bring children from Enable Ireland and the Mayor of Galway councillor Declan McDonnell into Mainguard Street for the official switching on ceremony. The children will help the Mayor turn on the lights.

Recently there had been fears expressed that there may be no Christmas lights in the city centre this year as some businesses had not paid their contribution towards the lights and the associated costs for last year.

However Mayor McDonnell told the Galway Advertiser that these bills are now being cleared and as a result the lighting was able to go ahead. He also said that businesses such as TX Maxx and all along Prospect Hill and Bohermore were keen for Christmas lights to be added to their part of town and will seek to have them included next year.

“The lights are a wonderful addition to the city centre,” said Mayor McDonnell. “They are good for business and they are good for the city.”
