Doctor denies charge of dangerous driving causing death

The trial of a doctor accused of dangerous driving causing the death of a woman two years ago is expected to begin today.

Fifty-year-old Dr Devi Chalikonda with an address at The Ashes, Cnoc Na Glas, Spiddal appeared at Galway Circuit Criminal Court last Tuesday where she entered a plea of not guilty to the charge of driving in a manner which was dangerous, causing the death of Eileen O’Halloran at Cregboy, Claregalway, on August 28, 2007.

The court heard that the accused had been a practising GP in Tuam at the time of the incident and that her husband C.V. Prasad, who accompanied her to court this week, was an orthopaedic surgeon at Galway Clinic.

A jury was sworn in to hear the evidence in the trial, which is expected to take at least two days to complete.
