Swimmers from all of Connacht and some from Munster competed over the two-day swimming festival at Leisureland, Salthill.
Hosted by the Galway Swimming Club, in memory of its founding father Jimmy Cranny, the meeting comprised a Halloween Junior u-11 sprint meet over 50 metres and an Open 200metres distance meet.
Thirty-three Galway SC swimmers competed in 187 races, achieving 88 personal best times and winning 10 gold medals, nine silvers, eight bronzes, and 23 finalists.
Galway SC team coach Gwen Ryan said the meet provided the “perfect preparation” for this crop of swimmers ahead of the Connacht Minor Schools in two weeks. Top performances came from Tim Keogh and Lauren Walsh in the u-9 category, Andraya Scully and Molly O’Sullivan in the u-10 category and David Knight and Rory Gaffney in the u-11 category.
Galway SC was well represented also in the 200 metre events with 34 swimmers representing the club in 107 swims, achieving 63 personal best times, 12 gold medals, 16 silver, seven bronzes and two new Connacht squad qualification times. Top performing Galway SC swimmers at this meet were Bryan O’Sullivan in the u-12 category, Saoirse McGrath, Ciara Naughton and David O’Sullivan in the u-14 category, Cian Duffy, Michael Heery and Jack Keogh in the u-16 category and Angela O’Connor in the Open category.
