Mill St pipe bomb duo to be sentenced

Two men who had been found in possession of a pipe bomb, a discovery which led to the evacuation of Galway Garda station earlier this year, pleaded guilty yesterday and will now face sentencing.

At the Galway Circuit Criminal Court yesterday 27-year-old Glen Walsh with an address at 8 Lealand Avenue, Bonogue, Clondalkin, Dublin 22, pleaded guilty to possession of explosives, contrary to Section 4 of the Explosive Substance Act, namely that on February 27, 2009, at Athlone, he was found to be in possession of a pipe bomb. He also pleaded guilty to possession of a firearm in suspicious circumstances, namely that on the same date at Athlone Road, Moate, he was in possession of a Remington Speedmaster rifle and a silencer.

Mark Phelan (23 ) with an address at 101 Castlepark, Ballybane, was brought before the court in custody for arraignment. He pleaded guilty to possession of explosives, namely that on February 27, 2009, at Mill Street, Galway, he was found to be in possession of a pipe bomb. Phelan also pleaded guilty to possession of firearms in suspicious circumstances, namely that on the same date at Athlone he was found to be in possession of a Remington Speedmaster rifle and silencer.

Judge Raymond Groarke adjourned Walsh’s sentencing to December 11 while Phelan will face sentencing tomorrow, November 13.
