Ancient war trumpets to sound in St Nicholas’

THE HORNS that raised the battlecry for ancient warriors will be played once again at a gala music concert at St Nicholas’ Collegiate Church on Friday November 13 at 8pm.

Ancient Music Ireland is hosting this concert - the first of its kind anywhere in the world - where a collection of Irish horns from the Bronze, Iron, and early Mediaeval eras will be played in great number together - some for the first time since 700 BC.

Among these will be a Bronze Age German Lur, Etruscan Salphinx, English carnyx (parade trumpet ) (c1000 BC ), Scottish horns and Scottish/Irish Medieval triple pipes, Irish Bronze Age horns (1000 BC ). Also participating will be more modern instruments including uileann pipes, mandolin, bazouki, flute, guitar, bodhrán, classical organ, whistle, viola, and cello.

Academic research into ancient European instruments has revealed a hitherto unknown “acoustic colour” which appears to be an intrinsic part of many of these instruments and in particular the ancient horns of Ireland and Britain.

Of the 17 musicians performing on the night, a number will be from Galway, including Derek O’Shea, Gerry Whelan, Kevin Whelan, Pat Power, Maria Cullen O’Dwyer, and Simon O’Dwyer.

The event also marks the release on the new CD Overtone. The concert will also be recorded and filmed. Audience numbers are limited to 230. Tickets are €18/15 from Maria O’Dwyer through www.ancientmusicireland.com, 094 - 9548396,

or 085 - 7642001.
