Mr C to DJ at The GPO

Just as the house and dance revolution of 1988 began to seemingly retreat to the margins, there was a brief but brilliant burst of energy from a group of Londoners called The Shaman.

The Shaman caused a stir in the early 1990s with the singles ‘Love, Sex, Intelligence’ and the punk rock/techno genius of ‘Ebeneezer Goode’. To the fore was their cockney voiced singer Mr C. It was all too good to last, but looking back now, perhaps they paved the way for the success the Prodigy would enjoy later in the decade.

Richard West (aka Mr C ) is now a successful DJ and he is coming to play the GPO on Eglinton Street this Saturday at 11pm.

Mr C started MCing in London clubs as a teenager in the early 1980s and earned a reputation as a fast talking, vivacious, rapper before becoming resident rapper at Camden Palace and MCing for Colin Faver on the then illegal Kiss FM.

He went into the studio to record his first house track with Eddie Richards as Myster-E in 1987. This inspired him to become a DJ and in 1987 Richard took to the decks. He went on to organise, promote, and DJ at a number of clubs before opening his own The End Club in London with Layo Paskin in 1995. The club celebrates its 13th anniversary this year.

Mr C is the founder and owner of Plink Plonk records, co-founder of End Recordings, and founder and owner of Superfreq Records. He records solo as Mr C or as the Sycophant Slags with Adultnapper. He has EPs due later in the year under both monikers.
