The second International Palliative Medicine Conference, organised by Galway University Hospitals, is to be held at the Radisson Hotel, Galway, on November 6 and 7.
The two-day conference will raise awareness of recent ground-breaking developments in cancer care, cancer pain management, and interventions to source pain and other severe symptom problems. It will also explore the philosophy of palliative medicine and palliative care.
The conference, called “Cuisle Beatha” (the pulse of life ), is organised by Dr Dympna Waldron and colleagues at Galway University Hospitals, with support from local GPs and Cancer Care West.
Outlining the importance of such a conference, Dr Waldron said, “The Palliative Care Services in Galway University Hospitals, Roscommon County Hospital, and Roscommon Home Care Team continue to progress, educate, develop, and research new ideas to achieve better outcomes for our patient population.
“This conference will bring together many experts from all areas of clinical practice, our educators, our researchers, our innovators and those who are attempting to promote care of the professional carer, to have a forum to explore issues, share knowledge, create debate to empower and energise our audience.”
A number of the world’s leading experts in the field will be speaking at the conference, including clinician and researcher Dr Declan Walsh, Professor and Director of The Harry R Horvitz Centre for Palliative Medicine, Cleveland Clinic, Ohio, USA; Dr Michael Kearney, Medical Director of the Palliative Care Service at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital, Santa Barbara, USA; Mr Gavin Quigley, Consultant Neurosurgeon, Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast; and experts from Galway University Hospitals.
The format of the conference includes presentations, round table discussions and interactive patient videos, which will prompt lively debate among delegates and provide the vision to explore challenging new concepts which will maximise their patients’ quality of life.
