Bohermore residents winning fight against anti-social behaviour

Students caught on video harassing elderly residents in Bohermore have been questioned by gardai.

As a result of a story published in this paper a file has been sent to the DPP regarding five drunken students who terrorised elderly people in their own homes in the early hours of Wednesday October 14. The video posted on YouTube showed the four men and one woman kicking and banging on doors on their way through Bohermore.

The video has attracted more than 14,000 views, and nearly 300 irate comments about the late night harassment.

The incident has come following an increase in anti-social behaviour, and widespread complaints of residents being terrorised by neighbours.

According to Sgt Shane Cummins after the video finished a patrol car stopped the students, and took their details. As a result they have now all been identified and questioned.

Calls from residents to end anti-social behaviour has resulted in a coming together of communities, and a combined effort to combat anti-social behaviour, according to Community Sargeant Brid O’Toole. “The feedback I am getting back from residents’ associations is that we need to reclaim the area.” Sgt O’Toole says that Bohermore and Woodquay are now being actively targeted with additional foot patrols to stamp out the anti-social behaviour. “We need a multi-agency approach to combat these issues, and we are endeavouring to tackle and resolve anti-social behaviour and public order offences.”

Increased efforts to end the harassment of city residents is expected over the coming weeks, with residents groups actively working with the gardai. Sgt O’Toole says that Woodquay residents’ association is strong, and will put an end to anti social issues in their area.
