The man charged with the murder of Claregalway man Kieran Cunningham over four months ago has been sent forward to the Central Criminal Court for trial.
Alexsander Nadwodny, a Polish national with no fixed abode, was brought in custody before Judge Mary Fahy at a sitting of the Galway District Court yesterday.
The 27-year-old man faces the charge of murder, contrary to common law, of 20-year-old Kieran Cunningham at Williamsgate Street on June 3 last. Mr Cunningham of Slievefinn, Claregalway, was stabbed a number of times moments after leaving a nightclub near Eyre Square.
The court heard this week that the book of evidence had been served on the accused before the court sitting.
Inspector Ernie White informed Judge Fahy that the Director of Public Prosecutions had consented to the accused being sent forward for trial or sent forward for sentence on a guilty plea, if that arises.
Judge Fahy gave Nadwodny the alibi warning. She then stressed that the plea was a matter for the accused to decide and ordered that he be returned, in custody, for trial to the present sittings of the Central Criminal Court. Free legal aid as well as junior and senior counsel were granted.
