Job fears continue for HP workers

Job loss fears will continue for Hewlett Packard workers in Galway, and across Ireland, after the company confirmed that it is too early to know if the 24,600 job losses expected worldwide will affect the country’s four Irish branches.

The confirmation came after last week’s announcement that the multinational information technology company wanted to cut 24,600 jobs from its global workforce on a phased basis over the next three years.

Speaking to Galway First on Friday, Anna Doody, Corporate Communications manager for HP Ireland, said: “The announcement made this week was a global announcement. It is still too early to say if there will be any effects locally, in Galway city or otherwise”.

Ms Doody also stressed that the company expects that at least half of the job losses will be made in the United States, with approximately 12,000 jobs being lost across the rest of the world. There are currently some 4,000 Irish workers at HP facilities in Galway, Kildare, Dublin, and Belfast.
