A Galway family is celebrating a triple success at the Ulster Junior Squash Open.
Donal, Roisin and Conor O’Shea of Salthill, three of the 17-strong party from the Galway Lawn Tennis Club, captured the u-11, 13 and 17 titles respectively.
In the u-11 section Donal O’Shea claimed his first junior title after a thrilling final in which he came back from a two-game deficit to defeat Scott Gillanders (Dublin ) 3-2. In the u-13 event, sister Roisin continued her fine form this season by adding the Ulster title to the Connacht title which she won last month. Seeded at number 1, Rosin cruised through the early rounds before defeating Casey Luther (Carlow ) 3-0 in the final.
The best performance of the weekend came from Conor O’Shea. Seeded third in the boys’ u-17 section, he took on Daniel Harkin, the number 1 seed from Dublin in the final, and with an attacking style from the start, he never gave his opponent a chance to settle, emerging a 3-0 winner.
Fiona Power (Knocknacarra ) was runner up in the u-15 section, narrowly losing to Breanne Flynn (Dublin ) in the final. Jennifer Hegarty (Dangan ) also finished in the runner-up position in the u-17s after a close-fought final against Elaine Ware (Carlow ). In the u-13s, Adam Fitzgerald (Knocknacarra ) and Paul Butler (Salthill ), both playing in their first tournament away from home, finished third and fourth respectively in their category.
