UK police investigating last month’s suspected arson attack which resulted in the tragic deaths of two promising jockeys, including Claregalway teen Jamie Kyne, have released from bail a man who had been questioned over the incident.
According to reports, the 37-year-old man had been arrested after the blaze. He was then released from bail after reporting to police officers on Sunday. Investigating police have said that detectives were still working on the case and are treating the fire as suspicious. They are awaiting the results of forensic testing and toxicology reports.
Eighteen-year-old Jamie Kyne and 19-year-old Jan Wilson, from Scotland, perished in the fire which ripped through a three-storey block of flats in Norton, near Malton, north Yorkshire, England, at around 2.15am on September 5 last.
Ian Brennan (20 ), from Donaghmede, Co Dublin, narrowly escaped the blaze by jumping to safety from the third floor of the building. He was admitted to hospital but was later discharged. Another Irish apprentice jockey, Dean Pratt, was also taken to hospital and treated for burns and smoke inhalation. It is believed that there were six people in the flats in Buckrose Court when the fire broke out.
Mr Kyne whose family run Kiltrogue Stud in Claregalway won 29 races this year and had been tipped as the potential winner of the Apprentice Jockey of the Year award.
