Council moves to deal with backlog of motions

The agendas for the Galway City Council meetings are clogged with numerous motions put forward by councillors, many languishing on the list, undealt with often for three or four years.

A report from the council’s procedures committee meeting decided it was time to deal with the backlog and its recommendation was heard at Monday’s city council meeting.

The recommendation proposed that councillors can only submit three motions at any one time, thus limiting the number they can submit to City Hall. However every second council meeting will have to set aside time to deal with motions to ensure a backlog is not created, or at least is kept to a minimum. The recommendation was agreed to by councillors.
